DISH Customer Inbox

Recently, we were asked to create messaging templates for our “Inbox” app on the DISH set top box. The intent is to have set message formats that are capable of having images added to them. While looking at the Inbox’s current state and the current layout of the messages, we decided to redesign our entire Inbox to improve the usage numbers and overall experience for this section of the UI. You can see some examples of its original design below here.

Landing Page
Navigating over to the list of messages
Message layout
Trash, which deletes every message in it after 30 days

In general, this area of the STB UI is used to give users information on their account and limited time offers / promotions. It wouldn’t be used very often by our customers, and realistically, most messages would have an automatic deletion date tied to them.

After working with product management, marketing, and our software team, we simplified the “Inbox” UI in order to improve the user experience. The previous build had unnecessary navigation and interactions which were removed. We started by removing the “Trash” section as it didn’t provide much use for the user and many of the messages they would receive would have expiration / auto-deletion dates for when the deal is no longer offered. We adjusted the inbox so the users could immediately read new messages and easily move between them with a single button press. We also added an additional method to scroll down the message text by allowing the user to highlight the scroll bar (in addition to the hot button press option that exists today).

Landing page for “Inbox.” Unread messages are in bold.
While on a message, a customer may use Ch +/- or navigate over to the scroll bar to read the full message
The user has the ability to “Opt in” to the offer
They can also choose to permately delete the message
A pop up notification to confirm deletion.

We initially ran usability testing using wireframes and higher fidelity mockups. The design is currently being implemented into our Beta program for further review and feedback.
